L-Carnosine is a naturally occurring dipeptide comprised of the amino acids alanine and histidine. It is present in the body; however, it is mainly concentrated in the brain, skeletal and heart muscles. It has demonstrated to have strong antioxidant properties in a number of clinical studies, both in animals and humans. L-carnosine is showing promising results in clinical trials conducted on athletes by providing antioxidants during physical stress, which may attenuate the production of lactic acid formation. L-carnosine has other biochemical roles in the body including scavenging free radicals and metal ion chelating.
